Two sides of a Coin
Disclaimer: I do not own Yu-Gi-Oh!
One-Shot
Summary: Two completely different people. Yami no Yuugi and Atem were completely different, yet they were always the same person in the end.
First thing I’ve written in a while. Finally needed a chance to wind down after soap opera drama at work. Maybe I can get back into writing again.

He, no they had been trapped in the darkness for three thousand years. Complete isolation plagued their minds and their existence. Chains weren’t necessary in binding them. Darkness and shadow magic confined them to the devilish prison of chunky pieces of gold. Their minds began to deteriorate, logic disappeared. Customs of their previous lives melted away. Memories fogged over, leaving nothing behind except fear. Everything concerning their pasts blew away with the tidings of the name binding them to their hell.
Time brought forth patience, sanity slipped away. Three thousand years of punishment would end one day. The two personalities of the prisoner faded away. Only one remained. A malicious vigilante with fiery red eyes sought freedom. He wanted a purpose to fulfill.
Light crossed his path. Soft touches of an innocent cradling the pieces of the imprisonment brought about hope. Completion was needed in order to fulfill the duties of the prisoner’s release. He wanted to hold such light, such perfection. He wanted the light!
Seven grueling years passed, frustration ebbing at the innocent mind holding his prison. Fear and panicked touches caressed pure gold. Piece by piece, the prison began to take form. Light consumed the darkness, fearing the prisoner.
The final form of the imprisonment was that of an inverted pyramid. The eye of Re glistened within its center. Darkness no longer held him captive. The prisoner had a purpose: protect the wielder of his existence and puzzle.
Bonding brought about understanding. The prisoner, now a spirit found purpose. He protected the light of his life, Yuugi Mutou.
Yuugi became everything he wanted and wished to be. Their appearances, similar in every aspect. Tricolor hair, piercing unusual eye colors. However, they were different in every other way. The spirit dedicated his “life” in protecting his charge. Even with purpose, the spirit lacked knowledge of his existence. He became “Dark Yuugi,” “The other Yuugi,” or simply dubbed “Yami Yuugi.” Shortly after his own thoughts, everything revolved around his Yuugi. The sixteen-olds wellbeing kept the spirit happy. Dark Yuugi or not, the other Yuugi knew there was more to him than the darkness of his past.
Atem… Was discovered through faded memories. Yuugi found his other self’s true name and past life. A young pharaoh named Atem. A regal man whom cared deeply for his kingdom. He sacrificed his life to the Millennium Puzzle, binding himself into it with his true name in order to end Zorc’s devilish rage upon his people.
Yet, with the knowledge, the spirit wasn’t the same. Atem and Yami no Yuugi merged together. The spirit wanted to rest. Yuugi no longer needed him. This is what Atem believed. Yami on the other hand, disagreed. The once spirit felt attached to the one whom brought life to him. The one who pulled him free from the confines of darkness. He didn’t want to let go of his light.
Until their final duel, Yuugi V.S. Atem all thoughts left the newly named spirit. The once pharaoh realized his Yuugi no longer needed him. Just as they had been separate during the puzzle’s completion, Yami existed no more. Atemu departed the living, knowing part of him remained attached to future in Yuugi’s heart.
-End.
